Julia Bangert presents illumination between the Middle Ages and the present

Julia Bangert works for the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, where she hand-applies book illumination and gilding to the reprints of the famous Gutenberg Bible available in the museum shop, based on original models. Alongside this, she works as an independent book illuminator, designing individually crafted initials, artistically decorated initial letters, and animal depictions. Inspired by historical models, she creates her own works in the medieval style as well as in a contemporary modern style.

In the exhibition, she shows a manuscript series with texts about animals in the style of a medieval bestiary. This originally takes the form of a moralizing verse that links the characteristics of animals and mythical creatures with Christian teachings on salvation. The artist offers insights into her working process, showing step by step how illuminated manuscripts are created. To accompany this, she presents reproductions of pages from the Gutenberg Bible that she has herself illuminated.
