Hans Greil (1845–1909), teacher and first director of the Hallstatt Woodworking School and later of the Ebensee Woodworking School, was not only an educator but also a renowned wood sculptor and carver whose significance extended far beyond the Salzkammergut. Greil created altarpieces such as the high altar in Litschau and the altar of the Wallsee Castle Chapel. He also designed, among other things, the model for the Franz Carl Fountain in Bad Ischl.
