A surrealistically staged parallel universe at the Marmorschlössl

Jakob Lena Knebl explores identity in her work in relation to themes from the fields of history, art history, fashion, religion, and mythology. As varied as her themes themselves, so too are the means of expression the transmedia conceptual artist draws upon for her interpretations.

Identity at the intersection of history, fashion, and mythology

For this purpose, Knebl will reconstruct the Marmorschlössl into a kind of stage on which various protagonists—whether figures and/or objects—will be staged in such a way that the audience will have the impression of moving through a kind of parallel universe. That Knebl herself will be part of it is beyond question, as it ultimately represents a projection of her ongoing engagement with her own multifaceted personality. In the grand salon of the former retreat of Empress Elisabeth, she will realize a dreamlike, surreal installation that, among other things, references works by the artist Ernst Heinrich Barlach. Visitors will also encounter her personal interpretation of the dancer by Impressionist Edgar Degas, as well as a very special staging of a swan—given that one once resided in "Sisi's" bedchamber. In the rooms of the upper floor, Knebl will present works by students alongside her own pieces, some of which are made of fabric. In the outdoor area, the artist will realize interpretations of the hut of the forest woman Baba Yaga (a mythological figure from Slavic folklore).
