Baumkuchen is a delicate pastry made from a light sponge batter, which is applied in layers onto a rotating spit and baked over an open flame. When sliced, the baked layers form rings reminiscent of the annual growth rings of a tree. Due to the elaborate handwork involved, it is also called the "King of Cakes."
