Sommer­frische – Jakob Lena Knebl

A surreal parallel universe staged inside the Marmorschlössl

Jakob Lena Knebl's work engages with identity in relation to themes drawn from history, art history, fashion, religion, and mythology. As varied as these themes themselves are the forms of expression the transmedial conceptual artist employs for her interpretations.

Identity at the intersection of history, fashion, and mythology

To this end, Knebl will reconfigure the Marmorschlössl into a kind of stage on which a diverse cast of protagonists – whether figures and/or objects – will be staged in such a way that visitors will feel as though they are moving through a parallel universe. That Knebl herself will be part of this is beyond question, as it ultimately represents a projection of her ongoing engagement with her own multifaceted personality.

In the grand salon of what was once Empress Elisabeth's retreat, she will realize a dreamlike, surreal installation that, among other things, references works by the artist Ernst Heinrich Barlach. Visitors will also encounter Knebl's personal interpretation of the dancer by Impressionist Edgar Degas, as well as a very special staging of a swan – since a swan once resided in "Sisi's" bedchamber.

In the rooms on the upper floor, Knebl will present her own works, some made of fabric, alongside pieces by students. In the outdoor area, the artist will realize interpretations of the hut of the forest woman Baba Yaga (a mythological figure from Slavic folklore).
