To play chamber music, artists must trust one another and breathe the music together – qualities that come naturally to Volkhard Steude and Peter Somodari, concertmaster and solo cellist of the Wiener Philharmoniker. Together with the wonderful pianist Jasminka Stancul, one of our regular artists, they form an extraordinary trio. The programme features two masterworks of the piano trio repertoire: Mendelssohn's deeply emotional and humorous trio, whose scherzo evokes his famous Midsummer Night's Dream overture, and Schubert's B-flat major Trio – a late work composed just one year before his death, which nevertheless radiates carefree joy and a zest for life. Alongside the E-flat major Trio, it counts among the crowning achievements of the chamber music literature.
