The beautiful Countess Mariza flees from pushy admirers to her Hungarian country estate and announces an engagement to the fictitious Count Zsupán. When this supposed suitor suddenly appears in the flesh and cheerfully tries to abduct the Countess, chaos ensues. An impoverished, mysterious estate manager – also in love with the Countess – turns the already tangled situation completely upside down.
